About the course

The Inorganic Materials for Advanced Manufacturing (IMAT) CDT enables students to develop expertise in the design, synthesis and characterisation of inorganic materials, while gaining an understanding of how these materials are translated from raw resources through manufacturing processes to commercial products.

The course combines research excellence with a comprehensive training package spanning inorganic chemistry, materials science and manufacturing. Substantive doctoral research projects cover a wide range of topics across these disciplines, enabling students to develop specialist expertise while working within a broader scientific and industrial context.

The course has been designed in collaboration with 19 industrial partners, representing a range of business sizes and technological expertise, to provide an insight into the opportunities and challenges facing the advanced manufacturing sector. Through close engagement with industry, students gain exposure to real-world applications, industrial perspectives and professional skills that complement their academic research.

A distinctive feature of IMAT is its cohort-based training model, which combines faculty-, industry- and peer-led learning. This integrated approach allows students to build a strong interdisciplinary network while developing both broad knowledge across the materials-manufacturing interface and deep expertise in a chosen area of research.

Course structure

This section provides an overview of the course structure, while details of the individual course components are provided below.

The IMAT CDT begins with a cohort-based training course to provide students with a strong foundation in inorganic chemistry, materials science and manufacturing. During the first four months, you will undertake a series of compulsory taught courses covering a wide range of topics in inorganic materials, ensuring all students have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their doctoral research.

In the second term of the first year, you will complete an eight-week industrial internship with one of IMAT's industrial partners. These internships offer the opportunity to work alongside industry teams in the UK or overseas, gaining first-hand experience of the challenges and opportunities associated with developing and manufacturing advanced materials. Travel and accommodation costs associated with the internships are funded by the CDT.

From the second half of the first year onwards, you will focus primarily on your doctoral research project, which is selected during the application process, before the start of the course. Research projects span a broad range of topics across inorganic chemistry and materials science.

Throughout the four years of the course, students will participate in an integrated training and professional development programme. Through faculty-, industry- and peer-led activities, regular engagement with industrial partners and cohort-based learning, you will develop the research, technical and transferable skills needed for careers in academia, industry and beyond.
