About the Go Public! programme
The Go Public! programme combines insight, engagement, and applied learning into careers in the public sector.
Oxford University students can sign up for events and access a wide range of online resources as they explore careers in the public sector and learn about graduate-entry and direct-entry routes.
Students can attend panel discussions featuring speakers ranging from recent graduates to senior public sector leaders, providing first-hand insights into careers across the sector. Students can also apply for public sector Micro-Internships to gain valuable experience, improve their understanding of the sector, and enhance their CVs.
The programme runs throughout the year and is designed to:
- Introduce the breadth and impact of modern public service careers
- Demystify competitive graduate entry routes
- Provide direct exposure to practitioners and decision-makers
- Build practical understanding through applied experience
- Develop confidence, clarity, and aspiration.

What is a pathway?
A CareerConnect pathway offers guidance, resources and activities on a particular topic. Oxford students can work at their own pace and explore each of the sections in any order. It also tracks progress, helping students to make sure that they haven’t missed any of the essential information.
Elements of the programme on the pathway
The pathway includes all elements of the Go Public! in a structured way, to help you navigate the different resources, events and opportunities included:

- Introduction to Careers and Graduate Pathways in the Public Sector: Monday 12 October, 13:00-14:00 (online)
- Public Sector Panel: Thursday 29 October, 12:00-13:00 (online)
- Careers in the Public Sector – High-level panel: Thursday 12 November, Event from 17:00-18:00 (event); Drinks from 18:00-19:00 (in person)
- Introduction to Careers in Policy: Thursday 26 November,12:00-13:00 (online)

Guidance and key questions
Who is this programme for?
This programme is for matriculated University of Oxford undergraduate and postgraduate students. Saïd Business School students* are not eligible for the programme. Visiting students, research staff, or alumni are eligible to attend the talks but cannot apply for Micro-Internships.
*Exceptions: MSc Law and Finance, MSc Financial Economics, DPhils, BA Economics & Management.
How do I know if this programme is right for me?
If you are curious about a career in the UK Civil Service or wider public sector such as NHS, Police or Local Government and would like to know more you will find this programme useful. If you would like to hear from those working in the sector about the career opportunities it will give you insights. If you would like to be inspired and understand different entry points this programme will highlight those.
Does it matter what subject I am studying or what year I am in?
This programme is open to University of Oxford students from all subjects and year groups. No prior knowledge of the public sector is required.
Do I need to attend the whole of the programme?
The programme is designed for you to attend whichever parts interest you most. It is recommended you attend as much as you can to gain insights and skills, but it is not obligatory.
