Using Artificial Intelligence in your graduate application

Each part of your application, where required, is designed to help us understand something specific about you: 

• Your personal statement or statement of purpose demonstrates your motivation, your understanding of the course, and your authentic voice.
• Your research proposal demonstrates your capacity for original intellectual thinking and your ability to design viable research.
• Your CV provides a record of your qualifications, experience, skills and achievements.
• Your written work sample demonstrates your academic writing ability and analytical capability.
• Your scholarship supporting statement (if required) provides further information on your alignment to scholarship eligibility beyond the information included in your course application. Note that scholarship supporting statements are not required for all schemes.

If Artificial Intelligence has generated the ideas and analysis in your research proposal, or articulated the motivation in your personal or scholarship statement or the argumentation in your academic writing, it is unlikely that the result will provide the depth of reasoning or personal perspective that will make our assessors consider you a strong candidate. 
 

The following uses are acceptable:

• Formatting documents
• Checking spelling and grammar
• Using Artificial Intelligence for initial research; to explore a field, identify relevant literature, or understand a topic, is also permitted, provided you then develop your own thinking and write the application yourself

Where you use Artificial Intelligence to assist in initial research, you should declare how you have used it in a footnote, in the same way as you would refer to literature that you have used.

• Using Artificial Intelligence to generate the ideas or arguments in your application
• Asking Artificial Intelligence to write your personal statement, research proposal, or other application materials for you
• Submitting Artificial Intelligence-generated text as it it were your own work
• Using Artificial Intelligence to fabricate experiences, qualifications, publications or achievements

Artificial Intelligence tools can produce plausible-sounding but false information. Fabricating information in an application, whether using Artificial Intelligence or otherwise, may constitute fraud. 

Artificial Intelligence tools used to assist with a disability are explicitly permitted. This includes voice recognition software, spelling and grammar checkers, and tools that transform transcribed speech into written language for users who face barriers to writing. These are not considered inappropriate AI use. 

Interviews are an important part of the admissions process for many graduate courses. They provide an opportunity for us to explore your academic potential, your reasoning, and your capacity to develop your ideas in real time in response to questions.

Artificial Intelligence assistance during interviews: you may use AI tools as part of your general preparation for interviews in the same way that you might use other study resources, but should not use AI assistance during an interview or other controlled-conditions exercise, as the interviewers seek to evaluate your own ideas and understanding.  

Your application materials: you should be able to speak authentically about your experiences, your research ideas, and your motivation. Interviewers may probe your submitted work in detail in their questions. If your written materials do not reflect your genuine knowledge and thinking, this will become apparent. 

If academic assessors consider that inappropriate use of AI was made in your application or interview, this may disadvantage assessment of your application. If inappropriate use is identified after an offer has been made, the offer may be withdrawn. Your application must comprise your own thinking, analysis and expression.
