Distinguished Friend of Oxford
The Distinguished Friend of Oxford Awards are presented to individuals who have acted as exceptional volunteers for the benefit of the wider collegiate University. The first awards were given in 1998.
The award recognises those who have given their time, expertise and influence to projects and initiatives of significant and enduring value to the University. Through the award we honour their pivotal contribution, which has both nurtured and advanced the University, safeguarding a flourishing Oxford for generations to come. We are immensely grateful to this remarkable group of supporters, advocates and loyal friends.
2026 recipients
Anthi Papadopoulos and Marios Papadopoulos MBE
Marios and Anthi Papadopoulos have made an outstanding contribution to the cultural and educational life of the University of Oxford through their leadership of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. Founded by Marios in 1998, the Orchestra has become a major presence in Oxford’s musical life, bringing internationally renowned musicians to the city while creating exceptional opportunities for University students.
Marios is an internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor who has served as Music Director of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra since its foundation. A Fellow by Special Election of Keble College, Oxford, he was appointed MBE in 2014 for services to music in Oxford.
Anthi, Chief Operating Officer of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and a Director of Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Productions, has played an indispensable role in the organisation’s growth and success.
Through its University Residency programme, generations of Oxford students have benefited from masterclasses with leading international musicians, conducting and composition workshops, orchestral apprenticeships and opportunities to perform alongside professional players.
Together, Marios and Anthi’s vision, commitment and service have significantly enriched Oxford’s musical life, strengthened the University’s engagement with the arts and helped nurture generations of young musicians.
Lord Powell of Bayswater, KCMG
Lord Powell of Bayswater has been an exceptional and steadfast friend of the University of Oxford for many years, providing wise counsel, leadership and support across Saïd Business School, Somerville College and the Ashmolean Museum. Lord Powell studied Modern History at New College, graduating in 1963 with first-class honours.
As Chairman of the Saïd Business School Foundation since 1995, he has been a loyal supporter of the school from its formative years, playing a significant role in its development and success. For over 30 years, his advice, advocacy and connections have been invaluable to successive generations of the university’s and school’s leadership. Driven always by a commitment to making the school a world-leading model of excellence and impact, he has advanced that early vision for the school through successive phases of development with rigour and humility.
A Foundation Fellow of Somerville College, Lord Powell has been a tireless supporter of the college. His guidance and assistance were critical to the creation of the Margaret Thatcher Scholarship Trust of which he remains a Patron. He has also given longstanding support to the Ashmolean Museum, where he is an Honorary Fellow.
This award recognises Lord Powell’s exceptional service, wise counsel and friendship.
Sir Paul Ruddock, FSA
Sir Paul Ruddock has made an outstanding contribution to the collegiate University, through his oversight of the University’s endowment, support for the arts and for Mansfield College. Sir Paul studied Jurisprudence at Mansfield College, graduating with first-class honours in 1980.
As Chair of Oxford University Endowment Management from 2015 to 2025, and Chair of the University’s Investment Committee from 2015 to 2024, he played an instrumental role in the responsible stewardship and growth of the University’s financial resources for future generations.
He is also a generous and longstanding supporter of Mansfield College, where he is a Bancroft Fellow. His personal philanthropy and his leadership role on the College’s Campaign Board are helping to secure the future of Mansfield College through its most ambitious fundraising campaign to date, including a transformational capital project.
Through the Ruddock Foundation for the Arts, Sir Paul and Lady Jill have founded the annual Mansfield–Ruddock Art Prize, which supports emerging artists from the Ruskin School of Art. His support for the arts also extends to the Ashmolean Museum.
This award recognises Sir Paul’s exceptional generosity, leadership and commitment, which have enriched Oxford’s intellectual and cultural life and helped secure its future for generations to come.
