About the course

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP) prepares the next generation of synthetic chemists to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges. Through an integrated programme of advanced training and original research, you will develop the knowledge, technical expertise and interdisciplinary perspective needed to drive innovation in human health, sustainable energy and materials, and food security.

Delivered jointly by the Universities of Oxford and York, the course combines the complementary strengths of two internationally recognised centres of excellence in chemistry and sustainability. You will benefit from cohort-based learning, a collaborative research environment and access to expertise from more than 40 academic supervisors across both institutions, alongside close engagement with industrial partners who help shape the training course and research projects.

The CSHP CDT brings together the complementary expertise of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of York. Research spans the full breadth of modern synthetic chemistry, with a shared focus on developing sustainable and circular approaches that address major global challenges.

During all four years of the course students also receive a tailored programme designed to broaden their research and professional skills, including an industrial placement opportunity.

Course structure

The CSHP CDT course begins with an intensive four-month taught course, designed to equip you with contemporary approaches to sustainable chemical innovation while fostering teamwork, professional development and systems thinking. During this period, the cohort spends time at both Oxford and York, including specialist training at York's Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence.

Following the taught course, you will undertake an original DPhil/PhD research project at either Oxford or York, chosen before the start of the course. Research projects address one of three major challenge areas – human health, food security, or sustainable energy and materials – and are frequently developed in collaboration with industry, providing opportunities to translate fundamental research into real-world impact.

Throughout the four-year course, you will benefit from a tailored programme of professional and research skills development alongside your doctoral research. Regular engagement with industrial partners, including site visits, networking opportunities and the option of an industrial placement, will provide valuable insight into translating research into real-world applications and broaden your career prospects.
