About the course

The course forms part of the University of Oxford master’s programme in psychodynamic studies and provides a broad-based exploration of psychodynamic theory, philosophy and practice. The course may be taken as the first step of full clinical training as preparation to apply to continue on the master’s programme or to other higher-level graduate courses in this field. Alternatively, the PGCert may be taken as a standalone course to add psychodynamic understanding to other work or practice in a non-psychodynamic discipline, though it is not a clinical practitioner status course.

The course is developmental, introducing classic and contemporary psychodynamic ideas and fostering self-awareness and reflexivity through experiential learning to prepare for supervised clinical practice, building on a rich history of psychodynamic studies at Oxford

The course is accredited by the UPCA (Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association) as part of the Psychodynamic Studies Programme. The programme is currently undergoing a review to ensure ongoing alignment with the highest industry standards. This is anticipated to be complete for the 2028/29 academic year and will have a route for students on the 2027/28 PG Certificate course to apply to continue training with the programme. Once complete, the UPCA will confirm any new accreditation status.

The course works using the UPCA and UKCP standards, which are based on a number of implicit ethical principles that highlight the important nature of boundaries, professional conduct and, in a psychodynamic course, the power of unconscious processes. Students should at all times act in accordance with the ethical codes issued by the UPCA and UKCP. Any existing or potential dual relationships must be declared and considered carefully, so that appropriate boundary arrangements can be put in place where needed. Please note that no applicant currently in therapy/counselling with a course tutor will be admitted to the course.
