About the course

The PGCert in Healthcare Systems Safety aims to equip you to:

  • analyse, diagnose, and address safety and quality concerns in any healthcare context; and
  • design, implement, and sustain system-based interventions at work which improve care pathways while enhancing worker wellbeing.

By joining the course, you will become part of a cross-disciplinary community of practice in the UK and around the world using systems thinking approaches to make healthcare work better.

Students completing the course will be able to:

  • diagnose systems safety problems using data from multiple sources and applying appropriate theoretical and analytical frameworks;
  • design and appraise appropriate human-centred, technology-enabled and ethically grounded solutions that enhance safety, quality, team performance and worker wellbeing in complex adaptive systems;
  • develop sophisticated implementation strategies for lasting change at team, department and organisational levels;
  • engage and communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders (including patients and their families) and build collaborations to support effective implementation and lasting improvement; and
  • exemplify sensitive and compassionate conduct, recognising the influence on organisational climate and healthcare outcomes.

Course structure

This section provides an overview of the course structure, while details of the individual course components are provided below.

The course comprises three taught modules. All modules are required for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Safety. One module is taken each term of the academic year.

Each module is made up of approximately ten weeks of study and learning, of which one week involves in-person teaching in Oxford. For four weeks before the in-person teaching week and five weeks after, study is guided but can take place wherever is convenient for you, with all necessary resources available online.

In the four weeks running up the in-person teaching week you should expect to dedicate 4-6 hours per week to preparatory reading and activities, accessed via the course’s dedicated virtual learning environment (VLE) which also provides support and resources between modules.

The in-person taught week in Oxford is full-time for five days and involves seminar-style teaching, group work, class discussions, guest lectures and interaction with tutors and lecturers. The taught weeks include practical activities to develop skills including a dedicated simulation centre. Optional evening social activities are organised by students and faculty.

In the five weeks following each taught week you should expect to dedicate 10-15 hours per week to researching and writing your module assignment. This is an opportunity to explore areas of particular interest in more depth, and to apply what you have learned your work setting.
