Generative AI tools and policy
We provide a range of enterprise-level generative AI tools that staff and students can use during their time at Oxford, supported by University-wide policy and guidance. Agreements are in place so that no data shared in these tools is used to train external AI models. Each tool is accessed via secure Single Sign-On (SSO) login.
AI for all staff and students
OpenAI
Oxford’s collaboration with OpenAI provides free-at-point-of-access use of AI tools for current staff and students in our secure workspace.
- ChatGPT Edu
ChatGPT Edu is Oxford's enterprise version of OpenAI's leading AI model, designed for sophisticated reasoning, content creation, and analysis. - Codex and ChatGPT Work
These are Oxford's enterprise agentic AI tools, unlike ChatGPT, which responds to questions and generates text, ChatGPT Work and Codex can read, write, and execute work directly on your files and digital environment in response to plain text language.
Through Oxford’s Google Workspace, staff and students can use Google AI tools with enterprise protections.
- Gemini
Google Gemini provides AI assistance both as a standalone tool and integrated within Google Workspace applications. - Gemini Notebook
Gemini Notebook is an AI-powered research and note-taking assistant grounded exclusively in the sources you upload. It is designed to help academics, researchers, and students organise and analyse large bodies of knowledge. - Google AI Studio
Google AI Studio is a web-based development environment for working directly with Google’s Gemini models. It provides a structured space to design, test and refine prompts, explore model behaviour, and prepare AI features for integration into applications.
Microsoft
When logged in to Microsoft 365 with SSO, all staff and students can access Copilot Chat. Microsoft Copilot is also available via a paid bolt-on licence, for staff and researchers who benefit from AI integration within their Microsoft 365 apps.
- Copilot Chat
Copilot Chat is freely available as part of Oxford’s Microsoft 365 environment. It is powered by GPT models. Unlike the full Microsoft Copilot app, it does not fully integrate into Microsoft 365 apps. - Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot integrates directly into Microsoft 365 app, so that staff can draw on organisational data to help boost productivity. This version requires a paid licence which is managed by the University’s central IT Services department.
Anthropic
Staff with full Microsoft Copilot licences will be able to choose between OpenAI’s GPT models or Anthropic’s Claude models when using the app in Microsoft 365, with effect from the start of the 2026/27 academic year.
AI policy and guidance
Across the University, policy and guidance has been developed to support the safe and responsible use of these tools, including in research, student assessment, and communications.
Use this page to access University-wide policy and find out about guidance available to all staff and students.
Many departments, faculties and colleges have their own policies or guidance. Staff and students are advised to seek advice on any local requirements that apply to their work or study at Oxford. Different academic courses may have different approaches to use of GenAI.
