Academic Futures

Applicants who are ordinarily resident in the UK may be eligible for an Academic Futures scholarship based on contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage provided as part of their application.  

We encourage you to answer all questions in the application form and provide as much relevant detail as you can. Answers to individual questions will not be directly visible to assessors.

You must have been Ordinarily Resident in the UK for three years before the start date of the course for which you hold an offer. This residence must not have been for the main purpose of receiving full time education. An exception to this is if you have been temporarily resident outside of the UK for the purpose of taking up temporary employment and would have been resident in the UK but for the temporary employment. 

Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential, taking into account contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage as collected through information on your application form. 

These scholarships are available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, who are of Black or mixed Black ethnicity. You must indicate this ethnicity on your application form in order to be considered for an award through this route. Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential, taking into account contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage as collected through information on your application form. 

You must have been Ordinarily Resident in the UK for three years before the start date of the course for which you hold an offer. These scholarships are available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, who are of British Bangladeshi ethnicity. You must indicate this ethnicity on your application form in order to be considered for an award through this route. Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential, taking into account contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage as collected through information on your application form.

You must have been Ordinarily Resident in the UK for three years before the start date of the course for which you hold an offer. This residence must not have been for the main purpose of receiving full time education. An exception to this is if you have been temporarily resident outside of the UK for the purpose of taking up temporary employment and would have been resident in the UK but for the temporary employment. 

These scholarships are available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, who are of British Pakistani ethnicity. You must indicate this ethnicity on your application form in order to be considered for an award through this route. Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential, taking into account contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage as collected through information on your application form. 

You must have been Ordinarily Resident in the UK for three years before the start date of the course for which you hold an offer. This residence must not have been for the main purpose of receiving full time education. An exception to this is if you have been temporarily resident outside of the UK for the purpose of taking up temporary employment and would have been resident in the UK but for the temporary employment. 

These scholarships are open to applications from those who have been in care in the UK at some point in their life, and faced barriers to progressing their education. 

For the purposes of selection, ‘care experienced’ means someone who, at any stage of their life before the age of 18, and for any length of time, has spent time:

•  living with foster carers under local authority care; or
• living in a residential children's home; or
• placed with your parents or other people with parental responsibility under a care order; or
• living with friends or relatives in kinship care – through a formal arrangement (such as a kinship foster care placement or Special Guardianship Order); or
• living with friends or relatives because you cannot live with your birth parents through an informal arrangement, without local authority support.
• This includes anyone adopted from care before the age of 18.

You do not have to meet the legal definition of being a 'care leaver' to be considered for these scholarships. You must indicate that you are care experienced on the graduate application form in order to be considered for an award through this route.

Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential, taking into account contextual data relating to socio-economic disadvantage as collected through information on your application form, alongside information on the barriers candidates have experienced in progressing their education. 

These scholarships offer financial support to pursue graduate study at Oxford to students who are refugees or other people with lived experience of displacement. These scholarships are available for applicants who have been displaced due to conflict, persecution, or other serious human rights violations or deprivations, whether within or outside their country of origin. These awards are open to all residencies and nationalities. Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and potential alongside contextual information on the barriers that candidates have experienced in progressing their education. 

Please note we are not able to sponsor student visas for part-time courses, with the exception of the MSc Sociology (part-time) and the MSc Social Science of the Internet (part-time). For other part-time courses you may be able to attend on a visitor visa for short blocks of time only (and leave after each visit) and will need to remain based outside the UK.
