Student story: my time at Oxford has been completely transformative

Tell us about yourself
I’m a third-year history student and Crankstart scholar at Brasenose College! Originally from Pontefract in West Yorkshire, I’m a vintage fashion enthusiast, tea-drinker, and ocean lover.
What has your time at Oxford been like?
My time at Oxford has been completely transformative, coming from a state-school background where Oxbridge was a very distant dream. I’ve met so many incredible people, students and staff alike, and I feel like I’ve truly thrived since arriving here in 2024. Not only have I learnt so much about my subject, but also who I am as an individual.
What are you involved in outside of your studies?
Outside of my studies, I am a member of Brasenose College Choir, as well as singing in various student bands. I also frequently write for the student press and have been involved in senior editorial roles!
How did you get involved and what has it brought to your Oxford experience?
I signed up for lots of musical opportunities during freshers’ week as a first-year, and I have stuck with it since. Being a part of the college choir has really made me feel like I’m living the ‘Oxford’ experience , and has given me weekly formal dinners to look forward to! Being involved in student journalism has been equally as enriching, giving me projects to focus on outside of academics and allowing me to stay in touch with my creative side.
Looking to the future
What are your future aspirations for yourself?
I would say that my future aspirations for myself are to live a happy and fulfilling life doing the things I’m passionate about! I really hope I can have a positive impact in whatever it is I do.
Crankstart scholarships
Crankstart provides support for UK students from lower-income households, and since 2012 the Crankstart Scholarship has supported over 3,500 students across the University.
