Student Conduct

The Proctors' role is to investigate possible breaches of University disciplinary codes. This includes behaviour after examinations and possible cases of plagiarism or other academic misconduct.

Academic Appeals

An academic appeal is an appeal against the decision of an academic body in terms of whether the examination procedures were followed properly, errors were made, or the process was biased in some way. There is no right of appeal over matters of academic judgement.

Student Complaints

The Proctors will consider complaints raised by students in relation to University administrative and support services and academic services.

Please note: if the complaint relates to admissions, college services, staff and/or student conduct, OxfordSU, research integrity or public interest disclosure, there is a different process that needs to be followed.

Residency enquiries

• Student migration from one college to another
• Requests to live outside the residence limit
• Residency terms

Student Clubs

Student associations – societies, non-sport clubs and publications run by students for students can apply to the Proctors to register with the University. You can also apply for grants to support your activities.

Examinations

• Late submission (i.e. extensions) of assessed coursework
• Non-submission of assessed coursework
• Missed examinations
• Dispensation from the academic dress regulations
• Mitigating circumstances for consideration of factors affecting performance received after the final meeting of examiners

The Proctors and Assessor play a large part in the ceremonial duties of the University.

The Proctors (and Pro-Proctors) preside at degree ceremonies and together with the Assessor attend the following ceremonies and events

• Inaugural and named lectures (such as The Romanes Lecture)
• Encaenia
• Memorial services
• Chancellor's Court of Benefactors
• VC's Oration
• High Sheriff's Law Lecture, Glove Ceremony & Court Sermon
• Admission of the Proctors and Assessor

The Bedels and Vergers

The role of Bedel dates back to the 13th century. The Bedels and the Verger cover all of the University’s ceremonies, leading the University party in processions.

Proctors' Officers

Formerly the Oxford University Police (or "Bulldogs" famous for wearing their bowler hats) the Proctors' Officers co-ordinate the planning, operational management, and security of University events, ceremonies and VIP visits.

The Proctors' Office provides the secretariat for three Committees which oversee the work of the Proctors' Office, Clubs Office and rules for the conduct of student members.
