Professor Hal Drakesmith

Professor of Iron Biology, Radcliffe Department of Medicine

Iron is fundamental for life, but both too little and too much are harmful to humans. Despite this, iron deficiency is enormously prevalent worldwide, affecting around two billion people, while iron overload disorders are common too. Professor Drakesmith's lab investigates how humans try to maintain iron in balance, how this goes awry in diseases, and how iron influences anaemia, infections and immune responses.
