Insight into Consulting is a programme and pathway for University of Oxford students which collates consulting related career events, activities and resources that take place over the course of an academic year.

About Insight into Consulting

The Insight into Consulting online pathway offers term-by-term resources, activities and events on careers in consulting, all in one place. You can work at your own pace and in any order and you do not need to attend all of the sessions. The pathway tracks your progress, helping you make sure that you haven’t missed any of the essential information or ways to build your knowledge of the sector.

What is a pathway? 

A CareerConnect pathway offers guidance, resources and activities on a particular topic. You can work at your own pace and explore each of the sections in any order. It also tracks your progress, helping you make sure that you haven’t missed any of the essential information.

What it includes

Events and opportunities are offered throughout the academic year as follows:

About the Client Consulting Challenge

Taking place at the end of Trinity term 2027, this client challenge will provide students with the opportunity to learn key consulting concepts and frameworks. Participants will then implement their learning along with a team of fellow-student consultants to advise a real client on their business challenge. 

Please note that this challenge is only open to current matriculated students and places are limited. Students will need to submit an application which outlines why they are interested in consulting and what they hope to gain from the challenge. 

More information to follow in 2027 when the Client Challenge opens.

Outcomes 

By the end of this programme you will have: 

  • Explored career options in the field of consulting
  • Learned from consultants about the realities of the sector
  • Gained ideas from experts for getting further experience
  • If completing the client challenge, gained experience of working in a team to support a real client.

Selection 

There is no application required to take part in this pathway, although an application is required to take part in the Client Consulting Challenge. 

Places are limited for the Client Challenge so once applications open, carefully read the application requirements and book to speak with a Careers Adviser for feedback on your application. 

Please note that the Programme Leaders, Fleur Houghton and Josephine Allen will not be able to review your application as they are on the selection panel. Eligibility The pathway is open to matriculated Oxford University undergraduate and postgraduate students, including DPhils. 

The Client Consulting Challenge is open to matriculated Oxford University undergraduate and postgraduate students, including DPhils. We cannot accept Saïd Business School students (Exceptions: MSc Law and Finance, MSc Financial Economics, DPhils, BA Economics & Management ), visiting students, research staff, or alumni.

Does it matter what subject I'm studying or what year I am in? 

This programme is open to students from all subjects and year groups and is aimed at those with little or no policy experience. 

What is the time commitment of this pathway? 

All of the activities and events on this pathway are optional. 

How do I know this is the right programme for me? 

This programme is aimed at those with little or no experience in the sector who want to understand what a career in consulting might look like and typical roles available. 

We recommend booking an appointment with a careers adviser to talk through any questions you have.
