New artificial football pitch proposed at University Club
The University will shortly submit a planning application for an Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) at the University Club on Mansfield Road.
This will occupy the area previously used as the site compound for contractors working on the Life and Mind Building project.
The proposed AGP will replace the grass pitch that was lost to accommodate the site compound several years ago. It is sized to meet international standards, measuring 96m x 56m, and can accommodate both full-size football and small-sided (7- and 9-a-side) games.
The pitch would be constructed using a third generation (‘3G’) synthetic turf carpet to provide a consistent, all-weather playing surface capable of intensive year-round use. To support this, six floodlight columns, each 15 metres in height, are also proposed, designed to minimise light spill.
The proposal includes secure perimeter fencing, spectator standing zones and team shelters. A bicycle parking hub, a water refill station and vending machines will also be provided.
The AGP will be constructed to Football Association standards and be available for use seven days a week, throughout the year, from 7am to 10pm. Bookings will be managed by an online system to ensure the floodlights are only used when necessary. The pitch will be accessed from the University Club entrance on Mansfield Road.
The University has a very high demand for football pitches. Oxford colleges currently field 110 teams (male and female). There is equal demand for training space for other sports as well as football. The AGP could also be offered for use to University departments, and to external organisations such as local Science Parks and private firms, with the potential to host corporate tournaments.
The map below shows the site of the proposed AGP. Once the application is validated, it will be available to view on Oxford City Council’s website, as the Council will undertake its own public consultation, giving everyone the chance to comment formally.
