Apprenticeships at the University of Oxford

An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme where the apprentice is employed by the University and works towards a specific, nationally-recognised qualification.

The Government funding rules for apprenticeships specify who is eligible. You will need to provide evidence to demonstrate your eligibility to both the university  and the training provider should you be successful in your application.

You can start an apprenticeship:

• At a higher level than your existing qualifications, including after completing a previous apprenticeship.
• At the same or lower level, as long as the apprenticeship provides substantial new skills and is clearly different from any training you have already completed

You must already have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the apprenticeship contract (the length of the contract will be listed on the Job Description).

You must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last 3 years.

There is no upper age limit, but you must be over 16 years of age to start an apprenticeship.

As a full-time apprentice, you’ll typically spend six hours per week on learning and development activities towards your apprenticeship qualification. This is known as off-the-job training — paid time during your working hours dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills required to complete your qualification.

During this time, you’ll follow a structured training programme delivered by one of our approved training partners, with comprehensive support throughout.

There are three types of apprenticeship qualification available:

• Intermediate: Level 2 (GCSE)
• Advanced: Level 3 (A-Level)
• Higher: Level 4-6 (Certificate of Higher Education through to Degree)

Different apprenticeships will have different requirements, depending on the job type and the level of qualification. Typically you will need GCSE passes in Maths and English, and a Science qualification for a science based apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship roles at the University of Oxford are offered on a fixed-term basis. Although permanent employment is not guaranteed, successfully completing your apprenticeship will put you in a strong position to apply for suitable opportunities as they arise.
