Graduate admissions statistics

Applications for graduate study have increased by nearly 115% over the last ten years, up from 13,500 applications for 2008-09 entry to over 29,000 for 2018-19.

Our graduate students represent many countries and cultures, and are from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds.

Graduate headline figures

  • 29,091 graduate applications were received for entry in the academic year 2018-19. 9,417 applications (32.4%) were for graduate research degrees and 19,674 were for graduate taught degrees (67.6%).

  • 22,547 applications (77.5%) were received from candidates with a country of citizenship outside of the UK. Of these, 5,268 (18.1%) were citizens of EU countries and 17,279 (59.4%) were citizens of non-EU countries. 6,544 (22.5%) of applications were from candidates with citizenship of the UK.

  • 25,826 individuals applied to one or more graduate programme.

  • The total number of acceptances was 5,742. Of those accepting their offer of a place at Oxford in 2018-19, 3,016 (52.5%) were male and 2,726 (47.5%) were female.
