Members of the actuarial profession provide risk management expertise to insurance companies, consultancies, government, regulatory bodies and a range of investment and banking institutions. The role of the actuary is to try to reduce financial uncertainty to a manageable level, and therefore improve the predictability of future financial performance. Actuarial expertise is an essential ingredient in managing the solvency of insurance companies and pension schemes globally.

Actuaries use probability theory, statistical analysis and financial mathematics to understand the past and to help predict future financial scenarios. Actuaries also need to have excellent communication skills both to discuss complex concepts and to explain findings and recommendations to non-specialists.

AI in actuarial work and using it in the application process

AI and machine learning are already part of actuarial practice in the UK. Recent reviews from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) show that actuaries are using AI techniques in areas such as insurance pricing, pensions, longevity modelling, and fraud detection. Employers see AI as a tool that can improve efficiency and open new areas of analysis, but they are also clear that human judgement, ethical awareness and communication remain essential. For graduates, this means developing strong mathematical and problem-solving skills alongside an understanding of how digital tools are influencing the profession.

In recruitment, you should expect AI to play a role behind the scenes. Many employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter CVs, and some use AI-enabled assessments or online interviews. To give yourself the best chance, make sure your CV is clear, well-structured, and tailored to the job description. Be ready to complete online numerical or analytical tests, which are common in actuarial recruitment.

When it comes to your own use of AI, tread carefully. The IFoA does not allow generative AI tools in its professional exams, and many employers also stress the importance of authentic applications. Using AI for light editing or brainstorming may be acceptable, but over-reliance risks producing generic answers that do not reflect your own skills or motivation. Recruiters want to see evidence of your judgement, your ability to explain complex ideas clearly, and your enthusiasm for the profession - qualities that AI cannot provide for you.
