Interviews

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026. Oxford interviews are academic conversations about your chosen subject, similar to a short tutorial and designed to explore how you think and engage with new ideas.

What are they?

There are some misconceptions about Oxford interviews, but in reality they are focused conversations about your chosen subject — more like a short tutorial with someone who knows it well. In 2026, shortlisted applicants will take part in online interviews in December. Interviews help tutors see how you think, respond to new ideas and engage with material beyond your school or college syllabus. The discussion develops in response to your answers and, in some subjects, may draw on aspects of your application such as your UCAS personal statement or submitted written work. You may be asked to explore unfamiliar ideas, think through problems aloud or consider new perspectives. Through these conversations, admissions tutors assess your academic potential and your motivation for your subject.

What to expect

We understand that it can be difficult to know what to expect from Oxford interviews or how to prepare, particularly if you or your teachers or family don't know anyone who has been shortlisted before. Our guidance on interview preparation, including video resources, aims to help everyone feel well-prepared so our shortlisted candidates can demonstrate their academic ability and potential during their interviews.

How to prepare - your interview checklist

Our guidance aims to cover what we would like shortlisted candidates to know and what we suggest they do to prepare for their interviews.

Music: performance video submission for shortlisted candidates

Fine Art: pre-interview additional submission
