Oxford Pro-Vice-Chancellor sets Guinness World Record running London Marathon in academic dress

Professor Alexander Betts, the University of Oxford’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (for External Engagement, Sport, and Community) has set a new Guinness World Record at the 2026 London Marathon, completing the course in full academic dress.

Professor Alexander Betts has achieved a Guinness World Record for running the fastest marathon in full academic dress.

Professor Alexander Betts is presented with his Guinness World Record certificate for running the fastest marathon in full academic dress. 

Running the 26.2-mile course through London in sub fusc, complete with mortar board, Professor Betts undertook the challenge while raising funds for Helen & Douglas House, the Oxford-based children’s hospice. 

He was joined by students and colleagues from across the University, many of whom were also running in support of their own charities and causes. 

The London Marathon, one of the world’s most recognised endurance events, drew large crowds across the capital, with participants supporting a wide range of organisations and personal causes. 

The previous record for ‘fastest marathon dressed as an academic’ had been set at three hours 31 minutes in Berlin, and Professor Betts broke it with a time of two hours 55 minutes.

Running dressed as an academic offered a way to show that universities can have a positive impact on the wider community, including through sport. It was also fabulous to see so many students, colleagues, and alumni on the day, whether running or spectating.”

Professor Betts' role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor includes a focus on both sport and community engagement.  The University has been developing a range of initiatives to engage with the local community through sport, including the Young Sport Leaders ProgrammeBannister Miles, and partnerships with Oxford City FC and Oxfordshire Cricket
