Update for students and staff following the recent legal and regulatory developments
Page last updated 30 April 2025.
The University has been closely following the Supreme Court’s ruling about the legal definition of a woman in the Equality Act, and the Office for Students’ investigation into the University of Sussex’s governance and policies.
We understand the strength of feeling within our community about these matters.
We would like to reassure you that the University of Oxford is committed to being a place where everyone belongs and is supported to succeed. We strive to maintain an environment in which the rights and dignity of all members of our community are respected.
The University reviews its policies and practices regularly. Following the recent Supreme Court ruling and the Office for Students' decision concerning the University of Sussex, we are carefully reviewing our policies and practices to ensure they remain compliant with the law and with guidance from regulators.
Oxford remains committed to being an inclusive university. We will continue to welcome students, staff, alumni and visitors from all backgrounds, including all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
Students seeking support for these issues are invited to contact the University’s Counselling Service, which is LGBT+ supportive. Students can also contact Rainbow Peers as part of the Oxford University Peer Supporter Network, or their college welfare lead.
