Your voice matters

At Oxford, students are able to play an active role in shaping their experience. There are lots of ways for you to share your views, raise issues and help bring about change, whether that is through your course, your college, the Student Union, or wider consultations and campaigns.

Student insight plays an important role in how the University develops and improves and this work is supported through partnership between students, Oxford Students’ Union (Oxford SU) and the University. Through consultation, representation and ongoing dialogue, student perspectives contribute both to major strategic plans - such as Oxford's Access and Participation Plan (see below) - and to a wide range of academic and student-focused initiatives.

Student consultation contributes to a broad range of University policies and initiatives, including those relating to:

  • Teaching, learning, and assessment - including curriculum design, feedback practices and academic support
  • Student welfare and wellbeing - including mental health provision and access to support services
  • Equality, diversity, and inclusion - addressing barriers linked to background, disability, race, gender, care experience or caring responsibility
  • Access and participation - through the development and delivery of the University’s Access and Participation Plan
  • Student life and community - including sustainability, volunteering, and engagement beyond the University.

In each case, student insight helps shape priorities, inform decision-making and assess the impact of change.

Access and Participation Plan

Oxford's Access and Participation Plan (APP) agreed with the Office for Students is one example of how student consultation feeds into University policy. It brings together evidence from students to support fair access, academic success and progression for students from under-represented backgrounds.

Importantly, the APP sits alongside - and is informed by - wider work on teaching quality, student support, and inclusion. This ensures that access and participation is integrated into the University’s broader approach.

Student representation

At Oxford, student representation operates through Oxford's Student Union (Oxford SU) - the independent, student-led body that brings student voices into the heart of University decision-making. Oxford SU is run by students for students, and all Oxford students are part of it.

Ways to get involved

All students are automatically members of the Student Union and you can get involved in ways that fit your time and interests: voting in Oxford SU elections, standing as a rep, feeding into surveys and consultations, joining discussions in your college or course, or taking part in campaigns and student-led projects. You do not have to hold a major role to make a difference. Training and support are available for students who want to take on representative roles or lead initiatives.

Oxford SU also supports campaigns, fundraising, volunteering and community action, so there are ways to get involved beyond formal representation too.
All students are automatically members of the Student Union, and there are many ways for undergraduates to take part, whatever your interests or level of experience.

You can:

  • vote in Student Union elections and referendums
  • stand as an undergraduate representative for your college, course, or the wider University
  • contribute to surveys, consultations, and discussion forums
  • take part in campaigns or help shape new initiatives
  • get involved in fundraising, volunteering, or charitable projects supported by the SU.

Students can choose to be involved occasionally or take on more sustained roles, depending on their time and interests. Training and support are available for those who wish to represent others or lead projects.

Oxford Student Voice podcast

You might enjoy listening to Oxford Student Voice a podcast created by Wantoe T. Wantoe (2025/26 President for Postgraduates at Oxford SU). The podcast series brings students and senior University leaders into open conversation, making space for honest dialogue about opportunity, leadership, and the future of Oxford. It is a platform where students can hear directly from decision makers while also sharing their own perspectives. Each episode explores how Oxford’s governance and vision translate into the lived experiences of undergraduates and postgraduates, while also highlighting how the Students’ Union is representing and working on behalf of its members. Together, these conversations ensure that student voices are not only heard but valued at the highest levels.

What this means for you

For applicants, this approach means joining a University that:

  • values student experience as evidence for decision-making
  • listens to students when developing policies and initiatives
  • supports students academically, financially, and personally once they arrive
  • encourages students to contribute to shaping their environment.

Whether through everyday feedback, representation, or consultation on major initiatives, students at Oxford help influence how the University evolves during their time here.
