IDLA Studentship: Gas Turbine Heat Management

This fully-funded research project addresses cooling technologies for turbine air systems, exploring phase change materials and heat transfer enhancement to improve ultraefficient engine fuel efficiency and support the UK’s net zero aviation goals.

Key facts

About this project

This Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded project in the DPhil in Engineering Science will require you to investigate a particular project in depth and write a thesis which makes a significant contribution to the field.

Cooled Cooling Air offers the opportunity to improve the fuel efficiency of ultraefficient engines which are an important component in the UK's strategy to achieve net zero aviation. This project will explore the science of novel cooling technologies, such as phase change materials and heat transfer enhancement, for the air systems used to condition the turbine cooling air.

The industrial partner for this project is Rolls-Royce.
