Many consider Mohandas Gandhi and his theory of nonviolence as the key to building a less oppressive world. Many others dismiss his theory as naïve and ill-suited to confronting the challenges that beset contemporary societies. Others, yet, as the "Gandhi Must Fall" movement shows, oppose Gandhi as a racist theorist whose political methods must be criticized and eventually abandoned. In view of these controversies, what can Gandhi still tell us today?

In this roundtable, Shruti Kapila (Cambridge), Karuna Mantena (Columbia), and Eraldo Souza dos Santos (Sorbonne) will discuss the global reception of Gandhi's ideas and current debates around his political thought. Faisal Devji (Oxford) will moderate the discussion.

Please note that the event will take place at the Maison Française d'Oxford and be livestreamed on Zoom.
