If you are required by your visa conditions to register with the police, it is an offence not to do so. You must also keep your Police Registration Certificate up-to-date by reporting any relevant changes.
Who has to register with the police?
If your student visa is for longer than six months and you are aged 16 or over, you will normally be required to register with the police in the UK if you are a national of one of the following countries or territories:
|Turkey||Turkmenistan||United Arab Emirates||Ukraine||Uzbekistan||Yemen|
|Or if you are classed as a stateless person or you hold a non-national travel document.|
The requirement to register will be stated on your visa sticker, on your Biometric Residence Permit if you have one, or possibly in a letter sent to you when your visa was granted so check all of these carefully. Your dependants will also be required to register if you have to register and they meet the visa length, age and nationality conditions above.
If you have more than one nationality, and one of your nationalities is not on the list, you should not need to register. If you have been asked to register you should get the requirement corrected. Contact the Student Immigration Advisers for help.
When, where and how to register with the police
If you are required to register with the police you must do so online within 7 days of arrival in the UK or within seven days of receiving your BRP if you have applied for a new visa in the UK.
Follow the instructions to create an account and register on the Thames Valley Police’s website.
Complete the online form and then book an appointment to collect your certificate. The appointment does not have to be within 7 days so can be within the next few months depending on the availability of appointments. The local police station for the University is St Aldates but you could also book an appointment at another station in the Thames Valley area if convenient. If you are required to quarantine on arrival, you can still complete this first part online within 7 days and then book your appointment when slots are available within the next few months.
You must bring the following to the appointment to get your police registration certificate
- Current passport
- £34 cash (exact money only)
- Student enrolment certificate
- Proof of UK address eg Tenancy Agreement, confirmation of college accommodation including room number
- BRP, visa or letter which includes the police registration requirement
Changes that need to be reported
You must keep your Police Registration Certificate (PRC) safe and get it updated with any changes by reporting them online following instructions on this page of the Thames Valley Police website. There is no charge to update your PRC. You will need to include your up-to-date PRC with any visa extension applications.
You must report the following changes within 7 days:
- address in UK, even if it is within college accommodation
- any new visa or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
And the following changes within 8 days:
- name or gender
- marital status
- course or place of study
- changes to any other information on your Police Registration Certificate
If you realise that you have failed to register with the police or update your PRC with any changes in time, do so as soon as you realise. If you have any problems registering or updating your details, contact the Student Immigration Advisers.
If you lose your PRC or it is lost or stolen you will need to report and explain the loss to the police. If after trying everything you are unable to find it, you will need to obtain a replacement certificate, following instructions on the Thames Valley Police website. You will have to pay the fee again.
