Social media

While social media is a fantastic way to keep in touch with friends, share experiences and connect with people you may have never before thought possible, it can also leave a lasting and visible impression of you. 

As a result, you are encouraged to think carefully about the posts you make and the access you allow others to have to your accounts. By maintaining strict privacy settings on your accounts, you are able to reduce the risk of identity or property theft and keep your social life private.

Please be aware that:

  • privacy settings can be used to restrict how much data others can see, especially people who aren't already your friends in the physical world
  • compromising photos or ill-advised comments could be viewed by people outside of your friendship group, including family members or prospective employers
  • if you contravene the University of Oxford’s rules or regulations relating to student conduct, you may be liable to face disciplinary action.

Social media in education

The University recognises and embraces the benefits and opportunities that social media can bring, from sharing news, information and successes to promoting healthy academic debate about controversial subjects and areas of research.

The University encourages you to engage, collaborate and innovate through social media; however, wherever and however you do this, you must be aware of the potential impact on both you and the University.

In all cases where a private social media account is used which identifies the University, it must be made clear that the views expressed on or through that social media account do not represent the views of the University.
