Brettschneider Fund Awards

The Brettschneider Fund provides opportunities for study, work and travel between Cornell University and Merton, New, and Nuffield Colleges. The awards are open to staff and students and are designed to promote academic exchange between Cornell and the three Oxford colleges

This award was set up following a gift from Mr Michael Borkan to enhance links between the universities of Oxford and Cornell.

Eligible travel must take place during the 2022/23 academic year, or in the Long Vacation either side of this. Applications for travel outside of this timeframe will not be considered.

Students are required to contact a possible supervisor at Cornell before submitting their application and will be asked to evidence this.  If an application is for an individual research visit, applicants should provide a letter of support/invitation from their host. If participation in a workshop or similar scheduled activity is proposed, a programme outline or similar for the event should be provided. It is expected that students will continue to be enrolled for a degree at the University of Oxford during their period abroad. Successful candidates will be required to obtain the approval of their college and department or faculty to study away from the University of Oxford.

The amount granted to successful candidates may be reduced if they obtain other grants or shorten the duration of the proposed travel period. Brettschneider Fund Awards may be held in conjunction with grants from other educational bodies - all other funding awards and/or pending applications must be clearly declared in the application.

Successful applicants will be required to submit a report at the end of their stay at Cornell.

How to apply

  1.  The application cycle for travel in the 2022/23 academic year is now open.
  2. Applications should be submitted using the online application form.
  3. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
  4. Please submit your application at least two months ahead of your proposed travel dates to allow sufficient time for review and preparation
