Open Day in Anthropology

St John’s and the Pitt Rivers Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Oxford have partnered to offer a unique study day for current Year 12 students interested in Anthropology.

Archaeology and anthropology together encompass the study of humankind from the origins of the human species to the present day. Both disciplines have a long history: archaeology grew from 18th-century antiquarianism, while anthropology began even earlier in the first days of colonial encounter. Today both subjects involve a range of sophisticated approaches shared with the arts, social sciences and physical sciences.

This is a great opportunity for any students who are either:

· Considering applying for Anthropology at university
· Would like to know more about how Anthropology is taught and researched at Oxford
· Would like to find out more about what studying Anthropology entails

The day will include a series of lectures and seminars in the fields of Anthropology and Archaeology, provided by Oxford tutors, researchers and postgraduate students. In addition to this, there will be object-handling and museum conservation (behind the scenes) workshops at the Pitt Rivers. We are also happy to confirm the involvement of the Royal Anthropological Institute at this event.

The event is free of charge to attend; lunch and refreshments will be provided during the day. If any student is either in receipt of free school meals or in care, St John’s can cover their travel expenses to and from the event.
