Information about the research study

The online writing competition will inform a research study on young people in Oxfordshire’s perceptions of ‘research’. The research is funded by the European Council.

How will the data provided be used?

The participant’s answers will be entered into a secure online form at the University of Oxford website, and all personal details will be securely stored in the website management system. Once the competition closes, the data will be downloaded onto a secure password-protected memory stick. The researcher will use all reasonable endeavours to keep the research data confidential.

Your IP address will not be stored.

Once all winners of the competition have been chosen and notified, all names will be replaced with a code number and the names and email address data will be deleted.

Please note that participation is voluntary. The participant or their parent / guardian may withdraw at any point during the online process for any reason, before submitting your answers, by closing the browser. Your child can also withdraw their entry up to the day before the Grand Prize Giving Ceremony.

All research data will be stored in a password-protected file and may be used in academic publications.

Who will have access to your and your child’s data?

The University of Oxford is the data controller for the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998. The anonymised research data may be shared with other researchers, and published in academic publications.

The principal researcher is Dr Frankie Wilson, Head of Assessment & Secretariat, Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford.

This project has been reviewed by, and received ethics clearance through, the University of Oxford Central University Research Ethics Committee; Ref: R50481/RE001.

What if there is a problem?

If you have a concern about any aspect of this project, please speak to the researcher Dr Frankie Wilson ([email protected]) who will do her best to answer your query. Dr Wilson should acknowledge your concern within 10 working days and give you an indication of how she intends to deal with it. If you remain unhappy or wish to make a formal complaint, please contact the relevant Chair of the Research Ethics Committee at the University of Oxford:
