Ruthless Dark Blues break Varsity record

Oxford's Rugby Union Blues have thrashed Cambridge 43-6 to record the biggest win in the 133-year history of the Varsity match.

The Dark Blues ran in six tries by Sam Egerton, Alexander Macdonald, Thomas Reeson Price, Ian Williams, George Cullen and Gus Jones in a dominant performance at Twickenham this afternoon (11 December 2014). Fly-half George Cullen kicked five conversions and a penalty.

After a closely fought opening period, Sam Egerton broke the deadlock by running from his own half to score a try. In doing so, he became the first person ever to score in three successive Varsity matches. A try on the stroke of half time gave Oxford a 17-6 lead at the break, before the floodgates opened.

Oxford has now won 58 matches to Cambridge’s 61. But having won the last five matches in a row, the Dark Blues are rapidly closing in on their old rivals.

Earlier on, Oxford's Under 21s beat their Cambridge counterparts 36-12.
