Museum Late Night

Friday 7 November

Celebrate crafting from around the world in the Pitt Rivers Museum after dark! This event marks the opening of an exciting new MultakaOxford display in the museum galleries. Called With These Hands, the new display invites visitors to embark on a journey across the globe through exploring crafting disciplines and stories that tell us more about the communities that make and use these objects, which have been carefully created by a group of MultakaOxford volunteers. The event will include an array of activities including workshops, museum object handling sessions, behind the scenes opportunities and much more!

James Martin Memorial Lecture

The Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Lord Hague, will give this year's James Martin Memorial Lecture on the theme of 'Environment, health, society and economics in the new era of geopolitics' at the Sheldonian Theatre on the occasion of Oxford Martin School's 20th anniversary. We are living in an era of profound geopolitical and technological change. Lord Hague will outline how far today’s age of instability is a departure from the Cold War period and the optimistic decades that followed, and what today’s new era of danger and excitement means for the environment, health, society and economics.

Financing Forest Restoration: The Distribution and Role of Green Fintech in Nature-based Solutions to Climate Change will focus on the emergence of ‘fintech for forests,’ where we see an exponential growth of online platforms and products that let users donate to, invest in, or even virtually ‘own’ trees via apps and online schemes. Drawing on original mapping and network analysis, the seminar will trace where these platforms operate, who funds them, and where the trees are actually planted. It will assess how fintech claim to democratise climate finance and make sustainability more accessible, and where those claims break down.
