Making History Here: Community History in Oxfordshire

Anyone with an interest in local history in Oxfordshire or Community History in general is invited to enjoy this engaging discussion exploring the experiences of historians working in and on Oxford and Oxfordshire. The panel discussion at the Faculty of History will be preceded by an optional walking tour highlighting the ‘Forgotten Stories of Oxford', led by community historian and creative artist Rawz. Making History Here: Community History in Oxfordshire is the second event in a public event series launched by the Oxford History Faculty’s new Community History Hub.

Oxford University to mark 70th anniversary of Sir Bannister’s four-minute mile with local community

Bannister Community Mile

The legacy of Sir Roger Bannister will be celebrated on the 70th anniversary of his record-breaking four-minute mile with a community 'mass mile' through Oxford. Runners will depart from St Aldate’s, progress down Oxford’s High Street, before finishing on Iffley Road to collect their medal on the Iffley Road Track. The community mile is open to all ages and abilities. Later in the day, athletes from across the country will compete in a series of track races. Finally, and precisely 70 years since Bannister set off, the event will conclude with men’s and women’s elite miles. Spectators are welcome at Iffley Road Track throughout the day.

Bruegel to Rubens: Great Flemish Drawings

Ongoing to 23 June 2024

A major exhibition at the Ashmolean showcasing over 100 exceptional Flemish drawings from the 16th and 17th centuries. They represent some of the most exquisite drawings created by many of the Flemish masters such as Pieter Bruegel, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacques Jordaens. These artworks, accompanied by paintings, prints and other objects they inspired, will be brought together for the first time.
