Elizabeth Boleyn: Recovering a Life

Wednesday 21 January

Historian and author Sophie Bacchus-Waterman will be speaking at Christ Church about her new book Elizabeth Boleyn: The Life of the Queen’s Mother, the first solo biography of Elizabeth Boleyn, mother of Queen Anne Boleyn. This talk will shed light on Elizabeth Boleyn’s time as a lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon, her pivotal role during the King’s Great Matter, and how she supported Anne Boleyn during her short but dramatic queenship. Who was the mother who raised the most famous queen consort in English history, and why has her story gone untold for so many centuries?

French Artist Communities: Van Gogh & Gauguin

Saturday 24 January

The third in a series of four talks examining four communities of French artists. While living in Provence, Van Gogh heard news of Gauguin’s experience of Brittany. He looked forward to creating a similar kind of colony, a ‘studio of the south’, and his letters reveal these hopes and the names of artists in Paris he felt sure would join him in Arles. His brother Theo, encouraged Gauguin to join Van Gogh. Their output reveals more of their dissimilarities than any constructive collaboration. The talk will include quotation from both men’s letters. With Juliet Heslewood, author and art historian.

William Shakespeare’s ‘Walking with Dinosaurs'

Friday 30 January

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Walking with Dinosaurs with a new theatrical production combining the prehistoric and the renaissance, adapting two episodes of the television series into Shakespearean drama, at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Witness the majestic sea monster Liopleurodon grapple with a Tempest and a T. Rex ponder 'two claws, or not two claws?'. There will be comedy, tragedy, heroes, villains, dinosaurs and maybe even an asteroid — all presented before you by a group of [decidedly-human] actors. The end result is sure to be up-roar-ious!
