Google Street View goes behind scenes of Oxford colleges

The quads of 11 Oxford colleges can now be viewed on Google Street View.

The Oxford University colleges have teamed up with Google to offer a behind-the-scenes virtual tour, which can be found here.

People can navigate around some of Oxford’s finest quads, libraries, dining halls and chapels.

Hertford, All Souls, St John's, Jesus, Oriel, Corpus Christi, Merton, Pembroke, St Edmund Hall, Somerville, and Lady Margaret Hall can now all be seen on Google Street View.

Many more colleges, Permanent Private Halls and departments have had the exteriors of their historic buildings photographed.

Stuart Fowkes, Head of Digital Communications at Oxford University, said: 'We want to attract applications from the very best students from around the world, whatever their background.

'In addition to running Open Days, we work hard to give people an insight into what life is like for an Oxford student by producing content that works for social media.

'By working with Google Street View, we can now offer people a virtual tour of many Oxford colleges. We hope prospective students, parents and teachers will see that although the colleges have grand and beautiful architecture, there is nothing intimidating about them - they are great places for students to live, work and socialise.'

Laurian Clemence, at Google, said: 'As one of the most sought after tertiary institutions in the world, Oxford University is a huge source of fascination for a range of communities across the globe.

'We know that potential students, historians, teachers, tourists and even alumni, would benefit from learning more about it. Now, anyone with a desire to see the university at close range, can access it like never before: using Street View to really explore some of the university’s prized rooms and areas.'
