Principal's Conversation with Prof Elspeth Garman

Join Principal John Bowers QC in conversation with Professor Elspeth Garman, Professor of Molecular Biophysics, Department of Biochemistry, and Nicholas Kurti Senior Research Fellow at Brasenose College.

Elspeth will describe her extraordinary career, including failing the 11+ exam and Cambridge entrance, moving from nuclear physics to biochemistry, being a woman in what used to be a man’s world and being a very effective Tutor for Graduates. She will also discuss her time teaching in Swaziland (including later fostering the daughter of one of her ex-pupils), her love of rowing, the joy of teaching at all levels, how to work part time and survive in research, why women often don’t apply for top jobs and why public engagement is important for scientists.
