About

Professor Goodman’s research is mainly on Japanese education and social policy. He has published two major monographs, Japan’s International Youth (1990) and Children of the Japanese State (2000), and has been the editor or co-editor of a further ten volumes. Most of his work is also available in Japanese editions. He is currently writing a monograph on the changes which are taking place in Japanese higher education. He has supervised more than thirty doctoral theses on Japan over the past two decades on topics ranging from Shinto shrines to volleyball coaches, teacher unions to karaoke, hikikomori to firefighters.
