Fresh tellings of ancient stories: Sex, Bodies and Christianity

This launch event for two significant and long-awaited books will include an opportunity to hear the authors in conversation. Professor Diarmaid Macculloch, Professor Emeritus of the History of Christianity in the University of Oxford, will talk about Little Lower than the Angels: a history of sex and Christianity and Professor Helen King, Professor Emerita, Open University and a prominent lay member of General Synod, will talk about her book Immaculate Forms: Uncovering the History of Women’s Bodies.

Libraries as Time Machines

Professor Robert Darnton’s lecture marks the official reopening of St John’s historic libraries and the conclusion of a decade-long restoration programme. The lecture will look at the importance of libraries in understanding how people thought in the past and consider the libraries of the future. Professor Darnton is a historian of 18th century France, with a special interest in the literary world, censorship, and the history of books. He was formerly Professor of History at Princeton University and Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library at Harvard.
