Putting nature on a path to recovery: how are we doing?

Wednesday 4 March

Dr David Cooper will highlight why urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss is important, describe progress in achieving the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Diversity Framework, and discuss what further steps are needed. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was agreed by all governments at COP-15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity in December 2022. It sets out an ambitious agenda to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity and put nature on a path to recovery by 2030. Later this year, at COP-17, the international community will take stock of progress towards the 2030 targets and 2050 goals of the KMGBF.

The Annual Family Science Bonanza will be a day packed with curiosity, creativity and hands-on science adventure at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Families will be able to dive into hands-on activities led by real scientists, experts and volunteers who can’t wait to share the wonders of science and nature. Touch real museum specimens. Peer through microscopes. Try exciting experiments. Listen to real whale sounds and uncover what they’re 'saying'. Explore everything from buzzing bees and slithering snakes to gigantic whales and extraordinary corals. Build your own bug hotel to take home, roar like a dinosaur and discover why scientists wear lab coats.

Pangolins: What Are They? Where Are They?

Monday 9 March

Pangolins are among the world’s most extraordinary and unusual mammals, instantly recognizable by their armour of overlapping keratin scales. Yet these remarkable creatures are also among the most threatened species on Earth. This talk will take you into the fascinating world of pangolins – exploring their evolution, unique adaptations and natural history. It will examine their cultural significance, the use and trade of the animals and their derivatives and the profound impact exploitation and other threats have had on their survival. It will also explore conservation efforts of the past 15 years and consider what the future holds for pangolins.

Event submissions are moderated, so bear in mind that your event will not appear immediately. All event managers should be aware of the University’s code of practice for meeting and events.
