Pangolins: What Are They? Where Are They?

Monday 9 March

Pangolins are among the world’s most extraordinary and unusual mammals, instantly recognizable by their armour of overlapping keratin scales. Yet these remarkable creatures are also among the most threatened species on Earth. This talk will take you into the fascinating world of pangolins. It will examine their cultural significance, the use and trade of the animals and their derivatives and the profound impact exploitation and other threats have had on their survival. It will also explore conservation efforts of the past 15 years and consider what the future holds for pangolins.

Let's Talk About: Surveillance

Thursday 12 March

Disease surveillance helps us spot outbreaks early, track patterns and look after public health. But it can also feel uncomfortable. As more everyday data is used to predict and prevent pandemics, questions about trust, transparency and who gets a say become harder to ignore. This is the second 'Let's Talk About' event created with the Pandemic Sciences Institute. Join us at the History of Science Museum for conversations exploring questions such as ‘how do you identify emerging pandemic threats?’ and ‘how should we navigate everyday data – from social media to wearable devices – being used in public health?’.

Pond Life

Monday 30 March

Families are invited to dive into the wonderful world of pond life at two events at the Museum of Natural History this month. Join in for fun, hands-on events where kids can discover the amazing creatures that live in ponds. Those heading along can also make their own pond-themed craft to take home with them and get an up-close look at real museum specimens – from fascinating frogs to incredible insects. Pond Life also runs on Tuesday 31 March. Head to the museum to explore, create and learn about the animals that call ponds home! Free event, no booking required. Recommended for children aged 3+.
