TOKYO: Objects and Subjects
With David Elliott, writer, curator, founding director of the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo
Examine the different genres (beauties, courtesans, monsters, and latterly heroines) through which women were represented in art during late Tokugawa and Meiji Japan. From the beginning of the 20th century we see the emergence of a distinctly female gaze in culture, with women becoming established as autonomous artists. Find out how these changes are reflected in contemporary Japanese culture, society and politics.
This talk links to our major Tokyo: Art and Photography exhibition, which is open until 3 January 2022.
The event will take place online on Zoom and a link to join the event will be shared in advance by email.
Booking is essential and tickets are £4 each.
