Steven Isserlis returns to the JdP to celebrate the legacy of the great Catalan and Puerto Rican cellist, Pablo (‘Pau’) Casals, who died 50 years ago at the age of 97. Casals’ extraordinary career coincided with the growth of the record industry, and his interpretations of key works such as the Bach Cello Suites, the Brahms Cello Sonatas and the Dvorak Cello Concerto made them a central part of our classical music culture. Tonight’s programme celebrates Casals’ achievements by reflecting both on Spanish cello culture and on the music of Édouard Lalo, the 200th anniversary of whose birth also falls in 2023.
