The performances of St Hilda’s College’s honorary fellow, the British cellist, Steven Isserlis, are always a highlight of the season at the JdP, and this concert is no exception. Steven is a pioneer in the development of new repertoire for the cello and the rediscovery of significant older repertoire. In this case, he has programmed two rare sonatas from 1851 that both carry the same opus number: the warmly expressive Moscheles cello sonata which was dedicated to Robert Schumann, and one of the latter’s greatest late works, the D minor violin sonata transcribed by Steven Isserlis for cello and piano.
