Primus Inter Pares: Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet
This concert is part of the Instruments of Time & Truth Summer Concert Series 2021.
Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is one of the earliest, best-known, and best-loved works for the clarinet, but it’s rarely heard on the instrument for which it was originally written: the Basset Clarinet, which takes its place as “first among equals” in this dazzling chamber work. In this performance, on period instruments, we are matching this beloved piece with a lesser known but charming early quartet by Mozart for a perfectly balanced summer evening.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791):
String Quartet in C Major K157
Clarinet Quintet in A Major K581
Featuring: Antony Pay (basset clarinet); Liz MacCarthy and Jean Paterson (violins); Vanessa McNaught (viola); Gabriel Amherst (cello)
