Camille Pissarro arrived in South London in 1870, with his partner Julie Vellay and their children Lucien and Jeanne Rachel.

They returned to France in mid-1871. In 1883 Lucien settled in London, and Camille wrote to him eloquently and frequently.

Lucien married Esther Bensusan, and their daughter Orovida was born in 1893. After Lucien's death in 1944, his widow and daughter made the remarkable gift to the Ashmolean Museum of a vast trove of letters, prints, and paintings.
