Medieval Embroidery (three-year course): The Garden of Love
Starts Sun 23 Nov 2025, 10.30am–4pm
A series of practical workshops in the Ashmolean Learning Studio. Workshops in Year 1 take place on Sun 23 Nov 2025, Sun 8 Feb 2026 and Sun 12 Apr 2026.
With Tanya Bentham embroiderer and author.
Whether an earthly or heavenly delight, love is all around us in medieval art.
From contemporary depictions of the classical myths of Aphrodite to tragic and courtly romance, these tales are often depicted taking place in sophisticated gardens of love.
In this three-year course, you will choose your own image to work in the medieval technique of opus anglicanum, using fine silks fit for the hanging gardens of Babylon alongside metal threads as golden as the rose.
There will be three classes each year, for three years, with materials and instruction provided for you to continue to work your design between classes. The cost is £275 per year, payable each year. The dates for Years 2 and 3 will be discussed with the participants and scheduled accordingly. This course will enable you to work up a larger and more intricate design than our one year course.
All materials are included in the price of the course, except the frame which you can purchase from Tanya or return at the end of the course. You can also purchase extra materials from her if you wish.
This event is part of our Connect & Collaborate season of events.
