Berg - Sonata op.1
Beethoven - Sonata op.110
Bach - Largo from Trio Sonata no.5, transcribed by Samuil Feinberg
Reubke - Sonata
Jonathan Powell returns to the JdP after a two-year absence with a programme exploring Austro-German keyboard traditions. The youthful and intense Sonata by Berg is contrasted with the serene and lyrical late work of Beethoven. The second half juxtaposes Feinberg's masterly pianistic realisation of a introspective Bach organ work with the grandiose and flamboyantly virtuosic sonata (of 1856-7) by Julius Reubke. He was a favourite pupil of Liszt and died aged 24; his organ sonata 'On the 94th Psalm' is frequently performed, while the contemporaneous piano work is much less often heard.
