Jonathan Powell (piano)
A recital of piano music by Sibelius, Szymanowski, Kornauth, Chopin and Paderewski
*rescheduled from 15 November 24
We are very pleased to welcome back award-winning pianist Jonathan Powell to the JdP in advance of our 30th anniversary celebrations. Jonathan has been a featured artist over the past decade, in which time he has given extraordinary performances of music by Scriabin, Shostakovich, Messiaen, Stockhausen, Sylvestrov, Winterberg and Ulmann, among many others. During this time the recording he made here of Sorabji’s massive ‘Sequencia Cyclica’ won the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis in 2020. Tonight’s concert presents a characteristically revelatory mixture of forgotten Romantic piano treasures, with a particular highlight being Egon Kornauth’s breathtaking Phantasie, op. 10.
6.45pm, pre-concert talk by Jonathan Powell and Professor Martyn Harry.
