Castalian String Quartet: Beethoven, Berg, Mendelssohn
Beethoven – String Quartet No. 3 in D major, Op. 18/3
Berg – String Quartet, Op. 3
Mendelssohn – String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80
The Castalian String Quartet presents a programme of three string quartets from Viennese composers. Starting with Beethoven’s lively and Haydn-esque 3rd Quartet (called No. 3 but actually the first quartet he wrote); then moving to Berg’s first quartet which ambiguously sits at the edge of free atonality, flirting with tonal allusions throughout; and finally ending with Mendelssohn’s final String Quartet, his last major work, powerful and tempestuous.
