Austrian Neutrality in a Changing Geopolitical Environment
This lecture details and contextualises Austria’s status of permanent neutrality. This principle, enshrined in the Austrian constitution since 1955, represents the cornerstone of Austrian security policy. The concept and practice of neutrality has undergone changes over the decades. Through the lenses of history and geopolitics, as well as constitutional and international law, this lecture aims to leave listeners with a better and more nuanced understanding of Austrian neutrality, and why it is considered a crucial tool for active and strategic foreign policy.
