Our workshops give KS3 students the chance to experience super-curricular enrichment that research shows can boost academic self-confidence, raise aspirations, and support long-term achievement.

Led by Oxford University staff and student ambassadors, these sessions use popular Oxplore Big Questions to spark curiosity and challenge students to think in new ways. Expect problem-solving, creative design tasks, and lively debates that build skills for future study.

The examples below show the kind of activities your students might get involved with at the festival — each event is a little different, but all are designed to be interactive, inspiring, and enriching.

Volatile Volcanoes

Why are volcanoes so dangerous? Compare different eruptions and take part in experiments to explore how gas, pressure, and magma stickiness (viscosity) can make eruptions more explosive.

The Language Lab

Explore the fascinating world of languages. You might get to discover ancient languages and try etching on clay tiles, or explore the rich diversity of endangered languages. Each workshop offers something unique to challenge and spark your curiosity!

Guardians of Immunity

Use the same equipment scientists rely on to work with a test tube of killer T cells —part of your body’s immune system – your mission is to find which germs your T cells can destroy! Scientists use research like this to develop new ways to fight disease.

Oceans First

Who doesn’t love a trip to the seaside? But have you ever wondered what’s happening to our oceans? Test seawater from your nearest beach and discover ways to address environmental impacts on humans, wildlife, and the planet—both locally and globally.

Does Music Matter?

Gain skills for life in this workshop that blends music and leadership! Discover how working with music and musicians can teach you valuable leadership skills for every area of life. Will you have to sing? You’ll have to join the workshop to find out!

Astrolabes

Try holding the universe in your hands and learn how the Mughal Empire used astrolabes in ancient times, when ideas from Islamic and Western cultures blended. Discover how studying objects like these helps researchers use history to shape a better future.
