About the course
The MSc in Major Programme Management is an intellectually rich, part-time programme informed by cutting-edge research and grounded in the best of international practice.
This specialised master’s degree combines the highest standards of academic rigour with a practical approach to managing large-scale, complex and transformational programmes, bringing together experienced programme managers to share their challenges and knowledge.
How do leaders face the uniquely complex challenges presented by planning and delivering major programmes? The MSc in Major Programme Management helps you develop the understanding, ability and confidence to address these challenges and manage programmes the scale of which can transform a company, a city, or even a country.
Designed for senior executives who may well have already undertaken a number of project management courses, this part-time programme awards a master’s degree from the University of Oxford whilst allowing participants to study alongside full-time employment.
Rigorous, selective and intellectually challenging, this part-time postgraduate degree programme consists of eight themed courses of four days each, studied in person at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School over 18 months. During these courses, students are expected to stay in or around Oxford. The courses are complemented by flexible study (reading, research, writing assignments) completed away from the business school. During the final six months of study you will write a 10,000-word dissertation on a subject of your choosing, so the total study period will be 24 months. Each module consists of approximately 24 hours of supported study. Students are advised that approximately 10 hours of self-directed study per week outside of the modules is required.

Please note that this course is paperless. This means that paper handouts will not be provided for most of your courses. All presentations will be uploaded to our virtual learning environment. For pedagogical reasons this may be in advance of, just before or immediately after teaching sessions. Handouts will be provided for certain courses based on specific requirements, eg unreliable internet availability or where handouts operate more like a textbook than slides.
The allocation of graduate supervision is the responsibility of the Saïd Business School and it is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff. A supervisor may be found outside the Saïd Business School. Students will generally meet with their department supervisor once a term.
The assessment regime for the core courses consists of 100% individual assignments (formal coursework) with a final dissertation of not more than 10,000 words. Assessment is performed at the end of each course. Students who fail to achieve the required standard have one opportunity to retake/resubmit the assessments. Students may be required to make regular presentations to teachers, and business practitioners.
Students are required to pass all of the core courses and the dissertation. The Gateway and Capstone courses are not presently assessed.

The Saïd Business School is one of the most modern, state-of-the-art business schools in the world. Facilities include seven horseshoe-style lecture theatres where most classes take place and a 300-seat lecture theatre opened by Nelson Mandela in 2002 to cater for larger-scale lectures and events.
A key feature of the building is the provision of informal working areas. There are numerous open spaces throughout, including cloistered walkways and a large internal courtyard – all of which help to foster interaction between students, faculty and visitors.
The Sainsbury Library is Saϊd Business School’s own dedicated resource. This state-of-the-art facility is spacious and fully equipped with desk space, wireless and networked computers, printers and copiers. Experienced library staff are available for advice and can help you use advanced search tools to carry out research for course projects.
Specialist research centres at the Saϊd Business School mirror the knowledge-intensive end of a creative economy. They are helping particular sectors to wrestle with the challenges they face and to discover new directions through research. These centres include the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation and Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, amongst many others.
The University expects to be able to offer around 1,000 full or partial graduate scholarships across the collegiate University in 2022-23. You will be automatically considered for the majority of Oxford scholarships, if you fulfil the eligibility criteria and submit your graduate application by the relevant December or January deadline. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or potential.

As part of your course requirements, you will need to choose a dissertation topic. Depending on your choice of topic and the research required to complete it, you may incur additional expenses, such as travel expenses, research expenses, and field trips. You will need to meet these additional costs, although you may be able to apply for small grants from your department and/or college to help you cover some of these expenses. Please note that this course requires that you are taught in Oxford, and you will need to incur travel and accommodation costs to attend the course if you do not live in the Oxford area.
In addition to your course fees, you will need to ensure that you have adequate funds to support your living costs for the duration of your course.
For the 2022-23 academic year, the range of likely living costs for full-time study is between c. £1,215 and £1,755 for each month spent in Oxford. When planning your finances for any future years of study in Oxford beyond 2022-23, you should allow for an estimated increase in living expenses of 3% each year.
